Our History
The college was established in 1910 by the Church Missionary Society as a training center for catechists and evangelists. Over time, it evolved into a hub for pioneering ideas in agriculture and social welfare. In 1935, the society launched a Normal School that trained a small number of primary school teachers for P4, P3, and P2 levels. Following Kenya's independence in 1964, the institution was transformed into a public teachers' training college. Its student body has grown in proportion to its physical expansion, and today, it is among the colleges offering a Diploma in Primary Teacher Education in accordance with the Ministry of Education's Competency-Based Curriculum guidelines.
Sponsorship
St. Mark’s Kigari Teachers Training College is sponsored by the Anglican Church of Kenya. The Anglican Church arrived in Kigari in 1910 through the efforts of Rev. John Comley, a CMS missionary. His contributions included evangelizing to the local community, providing literacy and numeracy education, and establishing a health center to care for the sick. His work led to the establishment of the college, Emmanuel Church Kigari, and several primary and secondary schools in the Mt. Kenya East region.
